INSTRUCTIONS: MICHIGAN PURCHASERS TAX RETURN (Form 48)
Michigan residents and companies must pay a use tax on all items or services purchased for use, consumption or storage in the state on which no sales tax was paid. Applicable transactions include items purchased over the internet, from mail-order catalogues and from newspapers, television and magazine advertisers. You are not required to pay this use tax if the seller collects Michigan sales tax. This form 48 can be found on the website of the government of the state of Michigan.
Michigan Purchasers Tax Return 48 Step 1: In the first section, enter your name or that of your company.
Michigan Purchasers Tax Return 48 Step 2: In the second section, enter your Social Security or federal identification number.
Michigan Purchasers Tax Return 48 Step 3: In the third section, enter your street address, city, state and zip code.
Michigan Purchasers Tax Return 48 Step 4: In the fourth section, enter your telephone number.
Michigan Purchasers Tax Return 48 Step 5: In the fifth section, enter the total cost of all purchase from the reporting period in question. The cost of delivery charges such as shipping, handling, crating and packing must be included. Note that not all items are subject to tax. Items such as clothing, electronics, furniture, books or jewelry are taxable. However, items such as prescription drugs, groceries, newspapers, vitamins and periodicals are not subject to use tax. You are not required to provide an itemized list of all such purchases.
Michigan Purchasers Tax Return 48 Step 6: Multiply the total cost of your purchases by the state use tax rate of 6%. Enter the resulting number into the box labeled "Total Tax Due."
Michigan Purchasers Tax Return 48 Step 7: Print out the form. Give your signature and the date.
Michigan Purchasers Tax Return 48 Step 8: This return must be filed on the 20th of the calendar month which follows any such transaction.
Michigan Purchasers Tax Return 48 Step 9: Mail your tax return along with a check or money order containing the full balance of payment to the address given at the bottom of the page. The check or money order should be made payable to "State Of Michigan." Write "Use Tax" in the memo section. Make a copy of the return and your check or money order. Keep these copies in your financial records.
