INSTRUCTIONS: RHODE ISLAND NONRESIDENT INDIVIDUAL INCOME TAX (Form RI-1040NR)


Rhode Island nonresidents who owe tax on income earned in the state, as well as part-year residents, file their state income tax owed using a form RI-1040NR. The form is found on the website of the Rhode Island Division of Taxation.

Rhode Island Nonresident Individual Income Tax RI-1040NR Step 1: At the top of the page, give your name, address and Social Security number. Those filing jointly with their spouse should include their spouse's name and Social Security number as well.

Rhode Island Nonresident Individual Income Tax RI-1040NR Step 2: Indicate with a check mark whether you wish for an electoral contribution to be made.

Rhode Island Nonresident Individual Income Tax RI-1040NR Step 3: Indicate your filing status with a check mark.

Rhode Island Nonresident Individual Income Tax RI-1040NR Step 4: Enter your adjusted federal gross income on line 1. Complete the separate schedule M form to determine your adjustments and enter these on line 2. Add lines 1 and 2 and enter the sum on line 3.

Rhode Island Nonresident Individual Income Tax RI-1040NR Step 5: Consult the chart on the left to determine your standard deduction and enter this on line 4. Subtract this from line 3 and enter the difference on line 5.

Rhode Island Nonresident Individual Income Tax RI-1040NR Step 6: Multiple all federal exemptions by $3,500 and enter the result on line 6. Subtract this from line 6 and enter the difference on line 7.

Rhode Island Nonresident Individual Income Tax RI-1040NR Step 7: Use the Rhode Island Tax Table or Tax Computation Worksheet to compute your state income tax on line 8. Complete schedule I on the second page to complete line 9. Subtract line 9 from 8 and enter the result on line 10. Follow the instructions to complete lines 11 through 15.

Rhode Island Nonresident Individual Income Tax RI-1040NR Step 8: On lines 17A  through 17F, document tax payments already made.

Rhode Island Nonresident Individual Income Tax RI-1040NR Step 9: Follow instructions on lines 18 through 21 to determine how much you owe or the size of the refund you are owed.

Rhode Island Nonresident Individual Income Tax RI-1040NR Step 10: Sign and date the second page. If filing jointly with a spouse, they should do the same.
