INSTRUCTIONS: CONNECTICUT ESTATE AND GIFT TAX RETURN (Form CT-706/709)

 

 

To document and pay the estate and gift tax due following the death of Connecticut residents and non-residents who died there, use a form CT-706/709. This form is also used to document tax due on gifts made by those still living. This form is found on the website of the government of Connecticut. This article discusses the form made available for tax year 2011.

 

Connecticut Estate And Gift Tax Return CT-706/709 Step 1: At the top of the form, give the donor or decedent's name, Social Security number, federal employer identification number if applicable,  and address. 

 

Connecticut Estate And Gift Tax Return CT-706/709 Step 2: Enter the address of the person completing the form. Enter the name and address of the fiduciary.

 

Connecticut Estate And Gift Tax Return CT-706/709 Step 3: Indicate with a check mark whether the decedent was a resident or non-resident.

 

Connecticut Estate And Gift Tax Return CT-706/709 Step 4: To complete the first page, you must first complete Schedule A on the first page, which documents the value of current year taxable gifts made by the decedent. You must also document gifts from prior period in Schedule B on the third page, compute the estate tax deduction in Schedule C, and compute the estate tax credits in Schedule D.

 

Connecticut Estate And Gift Tax Return CT-706/709 Step 5: Return to the first page. Schedule 1 should only be completed if the donor died during calendar year 2011. Otherwise, skip to Schedule 2.

 

Connecticut Estate And Gift Tax Return CT-706/709 Step 6: Compute the estate tax owed as instructed in Schedule 2. You should also attach federal forms 706, 709 and any applicable supplemental documents.

 

Connecticut Estate And Gift Tax Return CT-706/709 Step 7: Calculate your tax due as instructed on lines 13 through 20 as instructed. 

 

Connecticut Estate And Gift Tax Return CT-706/709 Step 8: If you are filing or paying late, compute your interest and penalties due on lines 21 through 23.

 

Connecticut Estate And Gift Tax Return CT-706/709 Step 9: The donor or fiduciary should sign and date the form, give their title and provide a phone number.

 

Connecticut Estate And Gift Tax Return CT-706/709 Step 10: Any paid preparer or authorized estate representative should also sign and date the form.
